A 20-year-old woman safely delivered a baby girl early Sunday morning with the assistance of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office 911 Communications Division, officials said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the baby’s father called 911 at approximately 4:31 a.m. reporting that his wife was in active labor. James Sheridan, a Radio Operator I, calmly guided the parents through the delivery over the phone until emergency responders arrived minutes later.
Units from the Spring Valley Police Department, Spring Hill Community Ambulance Corps, and Rockland Paramedic Services responded to the scene. The mother and newborn were transported without incident to Montefiore Nyack Hospital.
Officials praised the dispatcher’s professionalism, noting that Rockland County 911 radio operators are highly trained Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs), certified by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, who provide critical assistance to callers during emergencies.
