Rockland County Residents Warned: Beware of Scammers Posing as Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) Representatives

In a effort to protect its customers from potential scams, Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) has issued a warning urging customers to remain cautious and informed about scammers posing as O&R representatives. The utility company emphasizes that scammers are becoming increasingly inventive, resourceful, and persistent, and is advising the public on measures to avoid falling victim to their deceptive tactics.

Janette Espino, the Vice President of Customer Service at Orange and Rockland Utilities, emphasized the importance of customer empowerment in the face of evolving scamming techniques. “As scammers become more imaginative, we want our customers to know they can empower themselves,” she stated. “A customer who receives a demand for immediate payment or feels pressured to give up personal information can stop the scammer by remaining composed and refusing to play along. But it all starts with recognizing the scammers’ deceptive tactics.”

O&R officials have outlined key points for customers to keep in mind to protect themselves from potential scams. Notably, the company never calls customers to demand immediate payment under the threat of a shutdown or disconnection. They also never request customers to pay their bills using pre-paid cards or cash apps such as Venmo or Zelle.

If a customer receives a call from someone claiming to be an O&R representative and suspects it may be a scam, the company recommends hanging up immediately and verifying the call’s legitimacy by dialing O&R directly at 1-833-460-7059.

Monica Martinez, the Executive Director of Utilities United Against Scams, highlighted the growing sophistication of utility impostor scammers and the need for customer vigilance. “Utility impostor scammers continue to grow more sophisticated in their tactics,” she cautioned. “Increasingly, we are seeing scammers use digital methods that target both younger and older generations. We encourage customers to stop and verify any unusual utility company requests before making a payment, regardless of whether the customer is contacted via phone, internet, or in person.”

O&R remains committed to safeguarding its customers and ensuring their security in the face of evolving scamming techniques. The utility company urges its customers to stay informed and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from potential scams.

For more information and assistance, customers are encouraged to contact Orange and Rockland Utilities at 1-833-460-7059.
