Rockland County Residents Urged to Heed Statewide Burn Ban Amid High Fire Risk

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued a statewide burn ban effective today, October 2, citing heightened fire danger and ongoing dry conditions.

Under the ban, residents are prohibited from starting outdoor fires for brush and debris disposal, along with all uncontained fires such as campfires and open cooking fires.

However, backyard fire pits and campfires that are fully contained and measure less than three feet in height and four feet in width or diameter remain permitted. Small, contained cooking fires are also allowed.

Officials remind the public that burning garbage or leaves is strictly prohibited year-round across New York State. Several municipalities had already implemented local burn bans before today’s statewide announcement.

Residents can stay informed by viewing the DEC’s Fire Danger Map at: https://dec.ny.gov/environmenta…/wildfires/fire-danger-map.
