Rockland County Reports 30% Drop in School Bus Violations as Safety Program Marks National School Bus Safety Week

As part of National School Bus Safety Week, Rockland County Executive Ed Day, Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco III, the Rockland County Attorney’s Office and BusPatrol Senior Vice President Ryan Monell came together to highlight the success and continued impact of Rockland County’s School Bus Safety Program, an initiative dedicated to protecting students and promoting safer driving around school buses.

“In 2023, this administration partnered with BusPatrol to launch a program that equipped school buses countywide with stop-arm cameras at no cost to school districts or taxpayers,” said County Executive Ed Day. “I’m proud to share we are making progress. Our program is changing driver behavior and improving student safety.”

Since its inception, the initiative has issued more than 45,000 violations and recorded a 30% decrease in offenses from the start to the end of the 2024 to 2025 school year. Additionally, 90% of drivers who received a ticket have not received a second, underscoring the program is changing behavior and improving student safety.

“I want to thank the school districts but more importantly, the bus companies for getting in touch with us, going through training with us, making sure their bus drivers understand what is expected of them,” said Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco III. “And I want to thank the County Executive for taking the step forward to do this, to save lives, especially children’s lives in Rockland County.”

The Rockland County School Bus Safety Program reflects the County’s continued commitment to student safety through education, enforcement, and technology. Rockland County reminds all drivers to remain alert and always stop for school buses with flashing red lights, children’s lives depend on it.

Drivers who receive a ticket can view the violation and/or pay the citation online at www.alertbus.com. You can also pay by phone or direct questions to BusPatrol at 1-877-504-7080
