Rockland County has been recognized as one of the top places in New York where residents receive strong value for their property tax dollars. According to a new study released by financial analytics firm SmartAsset, Rockland ranked 9th statewide with an overall score of 32.28, based on a comprehensive evaluation of several economic and quality-of-life metrics.
The annual study evaluates counties across New York by analyzing factors such as property tax rates, school rankings, crime rates, housing values, and the availability of local services. The goal is to determine where taxpayers see the greatest return on their contributions to local governments.
Rockland’s high ranking reflects its balance of strong public services, educational infrastructure, and relatively stable home values, despite having some of the highest property taxes in the state. The report highlights that value doesn’t just come from lower tax rates, but from how effectively those taxes are used to benefit residents.
Other Hudson Valley counties also performed well in the rankings. Sullivan County earned 4th place with a score of 39.64, and Orange County followed closely behind in 7th with 33.61. The top-ranked county in New York was Putnam, scoring an impressive 43.84.
As property taxes remain a hot-button issue across New York, especially in downstate regions like the Hudson Valley, studies like these provide important insight for residents and potential homebuyers seeking both affordability and quality of life.

There are lies, real lies and statistics. This survey is mostly County services. The difference between town services is probably not measured here.
