The Open Space Institute has acquired 132 acres, known as the Eagle Valley Assemblage, to protect essential water resources and enhance a significant corridor of undeveloped land between Sterling Forest and Harriman State Parks. This acquisition aims to preserve the natural landscape and contribute to environmental conservation efforts in the area.
The institute plans to transfer the land to Rockland County, with potential uses including the establishment of a new county park and creating connections between the train station and nearby protected areas. This initiative highlights the ongoing commitment to expanding and preserving public green spaces.
County Executive Ed Day expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “The County is excited to partner with the Open Space Institute on preserving these two beautiful properties in the Village of Sloatsburg as parkland. It is rare these days to find undeveloped parcels of this size in Rockland, and I am proud to be able to protect them for the benefit of future generations.”
