In an effort to increase road safety and reduce speeding, Police Departments across Rockland County and other agencies across New York State will be participating in this year’s Speed Awareness Enforcement Mobilization. The campaign, sponsored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, is held annually in August and encourages police departments to step up enforcement against speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding has been a significant factor in fatal crashes in New York. In 2022, nearly one-third of the fatal accidents in the state were attributed to speeding. The summer months, in particular, tend to see an increase in the number of speed-related accidents.
Additionally, the NHTSA reported that three out of ten drivers speed, and that these individuals are more likely to engage in other dangerous behaviors behind the wheel. Speeding not only puts the life of the driver at risk but also endangers the lives of everyone on the road.
“Speeding continues to be a serious problem on our roads and throughout the state,” said a Rockland County spokesperson. “This enforcement mobilization is an opportunity for us to focus on addressing this issue and promoting safe driving.”
Officers from all Rockland County Police Departments will be actively patrolling local roads and enforcing speed limits from August 14th to August 20th. They will be particularly vigilant in looking for drivers who are speeding or engaging in aggressive driving behaviors.
Rockland County law enforcement personnel urge all drivers to exercise caution while on the road and to obey posted speed limits. “We all share the responsibility of making our roads safer,” the spokesperson said. “Please slow down, be aware of other road users, and remember that speed limits are set for a reason.”
By working together and adhering to the rules of the road, we can all contribute to a safer driving environment for everyone.
