Rockland County is launching its search for the next County Poet Laureate, with applications set to open Saturday, August 15, as current Poet Laureate Juan Pablo Mobili prepares to complete his term at the end of the year.
County Executive Ed Day and the Arts Council of Rockland announced Friday that applications for the 2027 Rockland County Poet Laureate will be accepted through September 30.
“On behalf of the people of Rockland County, I want to thank Juan for his dedicated service and the passion he has brought to his role as Poet Laureate,” Day said. “As we begin the search for our next Poet Laureate, I encourage the talented writers throughout our community to consider applying for this unique opportunity to share their voice, inspire others, and leave their own mark on Rockland County.”
The Rockland County Poet Laureate Program is a partnership between the County and the Arts Council of Rockland aimed at promoting literary arts and connecting writers with residents. The Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador for poetry through public appearances, educational programs, civic events and other community initiatives.
Mobili called serving as Poet Laureate “an incredible honor and a deeply meaningful experience,” saying poetry has the ability to bring people together and give voice to shared experiences.
“ACOR is thrilled to once again be partnering with County Executive Ed Day to recognize poetry’s vital role in our community’s cultural traditions and civic life,” Arts Council of Rockland Executive Director Dorothy Atzl said.
The next Poet Laureate will serve a one-year term from January 1 through December 31, 2027, with the option of being renewed for a second year through the end of 2028.
Applicants must be at least 25 years old and must have either published poetry or a history of public poetry performances. An advisory committee organized by the Arts Council of Rockland will review the applications and recommend a candidate to the County Executive. Day will make the final appointment, subject to confirmation by the Rockland County Legislature.
