Rockland County Officials Warn Public About Dangerous Chromebook Tampering Trend

The Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services is warning residents about a disturbing social media trend that encourages individuals—particularly students—to tamper with the internal components of Chromebooks and other laptops, creating a serious fire hazard.

According to Fire & Emergency Services Director Chris Kear, the trend involves damaging or modifying the charging ports and lithium-ion batteries inside the devices. Such tampering can lead to battery failure, toxic vapor release, and in some cases, dangerous fires.

Officials stress that this behavior poses a major threat to both personal safety and property. Parents, guardians, and school personnel are urged to speak with children and students about the risks and to report any such incidents to school authorities or local fire departments immediately.

The county is emphasizing the importance of awareness and prevention to help stop this hazardous trend before it leads to injury or destruction.
