Rockland County Mourns Retired Chief Criminal Investigator Peter Modafferi of the District Attorney’s Office

Rockland County is mourning the loss of retired Chief Criminal Investigator Peter Modafferi, a dedicated law enforcement veteran who served the community for 45 years, including 30 as Chief Criminal Investigator for the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office (RCDAO).

Modafferi began his career in June 1972 as an investigator with the Rockland Public Defender’s Office. Over the decades, he played a pivotal role in shaping criminal investigations in the county, working under four district attorneys before retiring in June 2017.

Throughout his tenure, Modafferi was involved in some of Rockland County’s most significant cases, including the murders of Lisa Thomas and Paula Bohovesky, the infamous Brinks Robbery, and investigations into the Genovese crime family. He was instrumental in establishing specialized units to tackle organized crime, gambling, narcotics, financial crimes, and political corruption. His efforts led to strong collaborations between the RCDAO and federal agencies, including the FBI, DEA, Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In 1973, Modafferi played a key role in securing a $125,000 grant to launch the RCDAO Drug Task Force, providing crucial resources to combat drug-related crimes. He also worked alongside retired Lt. Mary Murphy to establish the Spirit of Rockland Special Victims Unit, which continues to provide essential support for survivors of abuse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern.

Beyond Rockland County, Modafferi’s expertise was recognized on national and international levels. He testified before the U.S. House Investigations Subcommittee in 2013, contributed insights to major media outlets like The Washington Post, and spent 27 years working with the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

A lifelong Rockland resident, Modafferi’s unwavering commitment to public safety left an indelible mark on the county. His work will continue to impact law enforcement efforts and the community for years to come.
