Rockland County Lowers Flags to Honor Victims of Tragic Mid-Air Collision

The community is in mourning following the devastating collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2025.

The tragic incident claimed the lives of all 64 individuals aboard the commercial flight, along with three soldiers traveling in the military helicopter. Officials are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

In response to the tragedy, Rockland County Executive Ed Day announced that county flags will be lowered to half-staff as a mark of respect for the victims.

“We are deeply saddened by this heartbreaking event,” said Day. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. On behalf of Rockland County, we extend our deepest condolences to all affected during this difficult time.”
