Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. Statement On Resignation Of Aron Wieder

Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. offered best wishes to Aron Wieder following his resignation from his County Legislature seat, effective Feb. 13.

“I want to wish my colleague Aron Wieder all the best as he solely focuses on his work as a state Assembly Member, but I will miss working with him in the County Legislature,” Legislator Hood said.

“Aron and I have worked shoulder to shoulder for more than a dozen years, on some of the most challenging issues ever to face County government. Aron was always there to lend his knowledge and his support and I have no doubts that he will provide the same energy and assistance in his Assembly efforts. On behalf of the entire County Legislature, I thank Aron for his leadership, his public service and his many contributions to improving the lives of our residents and businesses.”

As a County Legislator, Aron Wieder aided County government efforts to confront its deficit crisis, address it and erase it, today leaving County government with top credit scores and a healthy surplus. His efforts included the elimination of two county taxes – the residential energy sales tax and the motor vehicle tax – and keeping county property taxes at zero increases in 2022 and 2023.
Then-Legislator Wieder also chaired the Budget & Finance Committee, with his efforts contributing to county property tax cuts for 2025, well as 2024.

Legislator Wieder has also been highly focused on necessary infrastructure projects, including the Stonehouse Road flood mitigation project, which he shepherded through the County Legislature, obtaining state and federal approvals to resolve the decades-long flooding crisis affecting residents of his legislative district in Spring Valley. The initiative was the largest infrastructure project in recent history in the Village of Spring Valley.

Legislator Wieder has also been an advocate for drainage and road improvements on Robert Pitt Drive. His latest efforts focused on a county-wide sidewalk project to improve pedestrian safety. The county has set aside $36 million for this vital project which will add new sidewalks in every legislative district.

He has also been a supporter of adding new and renovating existing parks, including the new Kennedy Park off Old Nyack Turnpike on the Spring Valley-Chestnut Ridge border, and the purchasing of hundreds of acres of green space around Rockland to ensure our drinking water sources are protected and that we will always have open spaces to enjoy.

His efforts to bring improvements to the Lake Suzanne area are to include this year a new boardwalk around the lake with seating and lighting to allow families and individuals the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful parklike setting.

Former County Legislator Wieder’s seat must be filled within 30 days via an appointment by the County Legislature or if unfilled, the Legislature’s Clerk must request the Governor to call a Special Election. If filled, the seat will be open to election in the next General Election (Nov. 4, 2025). The rules for filling the seat are stated in Section 149-1D under the Rules of the Legislature in the Rockland County Code: https://ecode360.com/9665092#9665093
