As part of National Gun Violence Awareness Month, Rockland County law enforcement agencies will hold two community gun buyback events aimed at reducing the number of firearms in circulation and preventing gun-related tragedies. The initiatives are being led by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Haverstraw Police Department, Spring Valley Police Department, and the New York State Police.
The first event will take place in Spring Valley on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at 245 North Main Street. Residents can anonymously turn in firearms in exchange for pre-paid gift cards. Compensation includes:
-
$250 for an operable assault rifle
-
$150 for an operable handgun
-
$75 for a rifle or shotgun
-
$25 for a non-working, antique, or replica firearm
The second event will be held in Haverstraw on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Village Hall, 40 New Main Street. Participants will receive:
-
$500 for each operable assault rifle
-
$250 for each operable handgun
-
$75 for any rifle or shotgun
-
$25 for any non-operable, replica, antique, homemade, or 3D-printed firearm
No identification is required and all transactions will be anonymous with no questions asked. Firearms must be unloaded, secured in a paper or plastic bag, and placed in the trunk of the participant’s vehicle, where officers will retrieve them safely. Law enforcement officers and licensed gun dealers are not eligible to participate.
District Attorney Tom Walsh stated, “Each gun turned in is one less risk to our community. These events are a crucial part of our ongoing efforts to keep Rockland County safe by preventing firearms from falling into the wrong hands.”
