As Rockland County prepares for a busy summer travel season and Independence Day celebrations, officials are reminding drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to stay alert and share the road as traffic and outdoor activity increase across the county.
According to Rockland County, traffic crashes in 2024 left 200 pedestrians injured and claimed the lives of eight people, while 83 bicyclists were injured and one cyclist was killed. With more families walking, biking, attending community events, and traveling during the summer months, officials say extra caution is critical to preventing further tragedies.
Through its federally funded Safe Streets program, the county is encouraging everyone to slow down, avoid distractions, obey traffic laws, and remain aware of pedestrians and cyclists at all times. Pedestrians are urged to use marked crosswalks whenever possible, wear reflective clothing at night, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Cyclists are reminded to wear helmets, use proper lights and reflectors after dark, and follow all traffic laws.
The campaign carries the message, “Eyes on the Road, Rockland,” emphasizing that traffic safety is a shared responsibility. The Safe Streets program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through a grant from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
