In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, County Executive Ed Day announced that two prominent Rockland County buildings will be lit up in purple throughout October. The Allison-Parris County Office Building on New Hempstead Road in New City and Building A at the Pomona Health Complex off Route 45 are both shining bright in support of survivors.
October serves as a reminder of the grave reality of domestic violence, with statistics showing that one in three women and one in four men experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.
“Domestic violence is a serious issue that we must confront as a community,” said Ed Day. “As a former law enforcement officer, I have had the tragic experience of responding to these incidents. It is critical that we bring this issue to the forefront and ensure it has the attention of our state leaders. By lighting our buildings purple, we not only raise awareness but also send a message of solidarity to survivors. We want them to know that they are not alone—we are here to help.”
Day urged Rockland residents to get involved by displaying purple lights outside their homes or wearing purple to show support for survivors of domestic violence. In addition, the county executive will be participating in “Purple Thursday” on October 17, a national day of action aimed at raising awareness and showing solidarity.
