Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Veterans Service Agency Director Susan Branam recognized four distinguished veterans for their service during the annual Buffalo Soldier Award Ceremony on Tuesday, February 11, at the Rockland County Fire Training Center. The 2025 Buffalo Soldiers Award was presented to Army Rev. Raymond Caliman and Alphonso Marshall, while the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Buffalo Soldier Award was given to Bertis Blanks. Vietnam veteran Charlie Maurshardt was also honored with an Honorary Membership Certificate.
“It takes a certain kind of person to place your own life on hold to put your country first, and all of our awardees did it without hesitation,” said County Executive Ed Day. “The freedoms we enjoy today would not be possible without the brave individuals who choose to serve, and it is my honor to recognize their courage.”
The Buffalo Soldiers Award is given annually to African American veterans in Rockland County who have demonstrated outstanding service to both their country and community. The term “Buffalo Soldier” was first used to describe African American cavalry regiments that served in the U.S. Army from 1867 to 1896, known for their discipline and bravery.
“We are especially proud of this year’s ceremony because our awardees represent military service from World War II through the Vietnam War,” said Veterans Service Agency Director Susan Branam. “These veterans have incredible experiences to share, and we honor them not only for their military
