Rockland County Health Officials Urge Walking for Heart Health During American Heart Month

In observance of American Heart Month this February, the Rockland County Department of Health is encouraging residents to take simple, everyday steps toward improving their heart health by adding walking to their daily routines.

According to the American Heart Association, walking at a brisk pace for at least 150 minutes per week can deliver significant health benefits. These include improved thinking, mood, and sleep; lower risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers; better control of blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol; increased energy and endurance; improved mental and emotional well-being; reduced risk of depression and dementia; stronger bones; and support for maintaining a healthy weight.

Health officials note that walking is an accessible and effective way to boost both physical and mental well-being. Residents are also reminded to stay alert near traffic to reduce the risk of injury. Safety tips include using sidewalks and crosswalks when available, obeying traffic signals, crossing at intersections, making eye contact with drivers before crossing, wearing bright or reflective clothing—especially during early morning or evening hours—and avoiding distractions such as mobile phones while walking near traffic.

The Rockland County Department of Health’s Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee program also offers free, interactive 45-minute presentations focused on pedestrian safety. Businesses, community agencies, and faith-based groups interested in scheduling a presentation can call (845) 364-2500 for more information.
