The Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) is holding two free mobile vaccination clinics this week, offering MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccines as well as flu shots for residents ages six months and older.
The RCDOH mobile vaccination van will be stationed at Evergreen Kosher Market, 59 Route 59 in Monsey, on the following dates:
-
Thursday, Nov. 20 (today), 2:00–5:00 PM
-
Friday, Nov. 21, 9:00 AM–1:00 PM
Health officials urge families to ensure that children and adults are up to date on their MMR vaccination, noting that vaccination remains the single best protection against measles. Individuals who are unsure of their immunity status are encouraged to get vaccinated, unless pregnant or immunocompromised.
MMR vaccines are also available at local providers, including Refuah Health, Sun River Health, and other federally qualified health centers. Residents may also call the RCDOH at 845-364-2497 or 845-364-2520 for assistance.
Those experiencing symptoms consistent with measles — including fever, rash, cough, runny nose, or red watery eyes — or those who may have been exposed should contact their healthcare provider before arriving for care to avoid exposing others.
Symptoms typically develop 10–12 days after exposure but can appear between 7 and 21 days. Severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death, can occur, particularly among the unvaccinated.
More information is available on the Rockland County Department of Health and New York State Department of Health measles webpages, and vaccines can be located at www.vaccine.gov.
