Rockland County Health Department Issues Rabies Exposure Warning After Rabid Beaver Confirmed In Nearby Mahwah, NJ

The Rockland County Department of Health is warning residents about a possible rabies exposure after a beaver in nearby Mahwah New Jersey tested positive for rabies.

According to health officials, the rabid beaver was present at Lake Henry and Continental Soldiers Park on May 3, 2026. Any Rockland resident who visited either location and may have had contact with the animal is urged to immediately contact the Rockland County Department of Health at 845-364-2594.

Officials are reminding the public to never approach, touch, or attempt to handle wildlife due to the risk of rabies exposure.

Rabies is a serious viral disease that can spread through bites or contact with infected animals. Residents are encouraged to report any unusual wildlife behavior to local authorities and seek medical guidance immediately if exposure is suspected.
