Last weekend, the Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Hazmat Team partnered with the Westchester County Hazmat Team for a specialized hands-on training exercise focused on flare-off operations.
A flare-off is a critical safety procedure used when a compromised propane storage tank can no longer safely contain its contents. Rather than releasing hazardous gas into the atmosphere, trained crews deploy controlled systems to ignite and safely burn off the propane, significantly reducing danger to nearby residents and the surrounding area.
Officials say exercises like this are essential in preparing for high-risk but infrequent emergencies. By training together, Rockland and Westchester responders strengthen coordination, enhance operational skills, and ensure both counties remain ready to respond effectively when these complex incidents arise.
