Rockland County Fire Officials Ask Residents To Clear Fire Hydrants After Snowfall As Seconds Matter

As winter weather continues to impact the area, Rockland County fire officials are urging residents to take a few minutes to help protect their neighborhoods by clearing fire hydrants near their homes.

Fire officials emphasized that snow and ice buildup around hydrants can significantly delay emergency response times when firefighters need immediate access to water. Residents are being asked to clear at least three feet of space around all sides of nearby hydrants and to ensure there is a clear path from the hydrant to the street.

“Keeping hydrants accessible is a critical part of community safety,” fire officials told Monsey Scoop. “We’re asking residents to help us help them by clearing hydrants near their homes. When seconds matter, having immediate access can make all the difference.”

Officials also stressed that hydrants should be fully visible and free of snow and ice, with enough room for firefighters to safely connect hoses and operate equipment during an emergency.

Residents are encouraged to check hydrants located near their homes, sidewalks, and properties and assist where possible. Fire officials thanked the community for their cooperation and ongoing support, especially during challenging winter conditions.
