Rockland County Fire & Emergency Services Urges Residents to Stop Using Damaged Batteries Immediately

Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services is issuing an urgent reminder to residents about the dangers of using damaged lithium-ion batteries, which have been linked to several recent fires across the region.

Officials warn that if a battery is hot to the touch, swollen or leaking, or emitting smoke or an unusual odor, it should be discontinued immediately. Damaged batteries pose serious fire and explosion risks and must be disposed of safely — never thrown in the trash. (Disposal guidance will be shared in an upcoming update.)

Additionally, residents are reminded to avoid exposing batteries to extreme temperatures. Leaving them in hot cars, direct sunlight, or freezing environments can cause malfunction or fire. Batteries should be stored and charged at room temperature whenever possible.

Authorities emphasize: “Protect your home by treating your tech right — and remember, safety always comes first.”
