Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to practice proper extension cord safety at home to help prevent dangerous electrical fires and other hazards.
Officials say extension cords should only be used as a temporary solution and never as permanent household wiring. Residents are urged not to overload cords with multiple devices, and to ensure cords are properly rated for the electrical needs of the equipment being used.
Fire officials also warn against running extension cords under rugs, carpets, or furniture, where heat can build up unnoticed. Cords should be kept away from water and damp areas, and regularly inspected for fraying, cracks, or other signs of damage.
Additionally, extension cords should always be plugged directly into wall outlets and never connected to other extension cords.
“Extension cords are useful, but improper use can quickly become a serious fire hazard,” officials said, encouraging residents to remain alert and take precautions to keep their homes and families safe.
