Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Highlights Lightning Safety Awareness Week

Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to stay alert during Lightning Safety Awareness Week, observed nationwide from June 21 through June 27.

The annual campaign aims to reduce injuries and fatalities caused by lightning strikes. Since the initiative began in 2001, the average number of lightning-related deaths in the United States has dropped significantly. However, officials stress that lightning remains a serious danger, with hundreds of lives lost nationwide over the past two decades.

Many lightning strike victims were participating in outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, beach outings, golf, soccer, and running. Emergency officials note that in many cases, victims were only moments away from reaching a safe shelter when they were struck.

Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services urges residents to remember the safety message: “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors.” If thunder can be heard, lightning is close enough to pose a threat. Residents should immediately seek shelter inside a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle and remain there until at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.

Officials encourage everyone to stay weather-aware throughout the summer and to practice lightning safety whenever storms threaten outdoor activities.
