Rockland County Executive Ed Day Appoints Dr. Mary Leahy as New Health Commissioner, Former Good Samaritan Hospital Head

Rockland County Executive Ed Day proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Mary Leahy as the next Commissioner of the Rockland County Department of Health. A longtime Rockland County resident and highly respected healthcare leader, Dr. Leahy brings over three decades of medical and administrative expertise to her new role.

“Dr. Leahy’s extensive experience, coupled with her deep commitment to the health and well-being of Rockland County residents, makes her the ideal choice to lead our Health Department,” said County Executive Ed Day. “Her leadership will be instrumental in strengthening public health initiatives and advancing healthcare access for all.”

Dr. Leahy is a board-certified internist who has practiced medicine in Rockland County for over 30 years. She earned her master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Boston College and completed her internal medicine residency at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx, where she served as Chief Medical Resident from 1985-86. She furthered her expertise through a fellowship in nephrology at New York Medical College’s Westchester Medical Center campus.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Leahy has been a collaborative leader and an advocate for community health. She established her own successful solo medical practice before co-founding Rockland Pulmonary & Medical Associates (RPMA), which is a large multispecialty practice and is now part of the Bon Secours Medical Group.

In 2012, Dr. Leahy was appointed Senior Vice President of Physician Operations for Bon Secours Medical Group, overseeing more than 120 practitioners. In 2013, she was named CEO of Bon Secours Charity Health System, where she set the strategic vision for system-wide operations, including three acute care hospitals, a regional home healthcare agency, and several long-term care facilities.

Dr. Leahy has been recognized by numerous organizations for her outstanding contributions to healthcare, including being named one of Hudson Valley Magazine’s Women in Business Award winners, Rockland’s Woman of the Year, and a NYS 2024 Woman of Distinction, nominated by Senator Bill Weber.

“I am honored to serve as Rockland County’s next Commissioner of Health,” said Dr. Leahy. “I look forward to working with our dedicated health professionals and community partners to enhance public health programs and ensure that every resident has access to quality healthcare.”

Dr. Leahy’s appointment reaffirms Rockland County’s commitment to proactive public health leadership and officially assumed her new role on February 25th which carries a salary of $224,681.
