A driver is facing multiple charges after authorities say he was caught illegally dumping solid waste inside Bear Mountain State Park in Northern Rockland County.
According to officials, the incident occurred on March 26 when an Environmental Conservation Officer responded to complaints of a truck traveling north over Dunderberg Mountain with an unsecured tailgate, causing dirt and debris to spill onto the roadway. Authorities also received reports that the same truck had stopped and dumped material on state park property.
Officers from State Park Police and the Stony Point Police Department quickly located and stopped the vehicle before it could leave the area, then requested assistance from a conservation officer to conduct a full investigation.
Investigators determined the load was not simply dirt, but a mixture of construction debris including bricks, plastic materials, and shards of glass.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was issued multiple tickets. Charges include depositing solid waste on state land, unlawful disposal of solid waste, transporting solid waste without proper permits, and several vehicle and traffic violations.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation later released images showing the debris that had been illegally dumped. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
