Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced that Yamil Caraballo, 35, of the Village of West Haverstraw, was arraigned Wednesday in Rockland County Court before the Honorable Kevin F. Russo on an indictment charging him with one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree and one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree in connection with the seizure of 1.2 pounds of fentanyl on March 5, 2026.
According to prosecutors, Caraballo was arrested following an investigation conducted by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Narcotics Task Force together with inspectors from the United States Postal Inspection Service. Authorities say the defendant was in possession of a package containing deadly quantities of fentanyl powder that had been sent through the United States mail.
Following the arraignment, Caraballo was remanded to the Rockland County Jail without bail. If convicted of the top charge, he faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in state prison.
District Attorney Walsh said the case highlights the strong collaboration between federal and local law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security, and the Suffern, Ramapo, and Haverstraw Police Departments, all working as part of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Narcotics Task Force under the leadership of Chief of Detectives Deirdre Smith and Narcotics Task Force Director Bill Martinez.
The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Dominic Crispino, Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Peterson, and Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Reilly.
