Rockland County District Attorney Announces 118 Firearms Turned In at Suffern Gun Buyback Event

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced that a total of 118 firearms were turned in during today’s Gun Buyback event held at the Leo Lydon Community Center in Suffern.

The event, conducted in partnership with the Suffern Police Department, resulted in the collection of 71 handguns, 21 assault weapons, 25 rifles and shotguns, and one non-functioning firearm.

Chief Deirdre Smith, head of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Investigative Unit, thanked the agencies involved, saying, “We’re grateful for our law enforcement partners who helped make this event possible. Events like this are a key part of our broader strategy to reduce gun violence through prevention and partnership.”

Village of Suffern Deputy Mayor Jo Meegan-Corrigan also attended, praising the teamwork displayed throughout the day. “It was exceptional watching everyone work together, and I’m grateful for the collaboration,” she said.

Participants arrived with their unloaded firearms packaged in a bag in the trunk of their vehicle. Officers safely retrieved the weapons, no questions asked, allowing residents to remain anonymous.

District Attorney Walsh emphasized the importance of proactive safety measures. “Every gun turned in is one less that can fall into the wrong hands,” he said. “Our office remains committed to practical solutions that keep our communities safe, and we thank the Suffern Police Department and the Village of Suffern for making today a success.”
