Rockland County Confirms Second Measles Case in Three Months as Health Officials Sound Alarm Over Low Vaccination Rates

Rockland County health officials have confirmed a second case of measles within the past three months, as cases continue to rise both nationally and globally.

The latest case, announced Friday, October 24, by County Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Leahy, is not connected to the previous case identified in August, which was reported by Monsey Scoop here.

According to officials, the individual recently returned from international travel, visited a healthcare facility on Tuesday, October 21, and developed a rash the following day. The diagnosis was confirmed on Thursday, October 23.

While the health department did not release details about the patient’s age, residence, or where treatment was sought, officials said contact tracing is underway and those potentially exposed are being evaluated for immunity.

Rockland County’s low vaccination rate continues to raise concern. Recent data shows that only about 62% of children under age two have received at least one dose of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine — among the lowest rates in New York State.

The county was the center of a major measles outbreak in 2018–2019, when more than 312 people were infected, prompting statewide changes in vaccine exemption laws. During that outbreak, the health department frequently issued public exposure alerts, though no such alerts have been released so far in the current case.

Officials urge residents to review their vaccination records and ensure that they — and their children — are up to date on all recommended immunizations.
