Rockland County officials, state and federal representatives, and community members gathered Monday morning for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Peace Garden honoring the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The ceremony, held at 10 a.m. at 11 New Hempstead Road in New City, was chaired by Rockland County Legislator Jay Hood, Jr. The historic initiative was envisioned by Legislative Vice Chair Hon. Dr. Aney Paul and Hon. Legislator Toney L. Earl.
The Peace Garden is dedicated to the principles of Peace, Nonviolence, Equality, Justice and Unity, and honors two iconic leaders whose teachings and legacies continue to inspire generations.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day and members of the Rockland County Legislature were in attendance, along with Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh. A representative from the Consulate General of India in New York also attended and addressed the gathering, speaking to the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s message of nonviolence.
The event also drew broad bipartisan support from across New York. Assemblyman Aron Wieder attended, along with staff representing Assemblyman Pat Carroll, State Senator Bill Weber, and Congressman Mike Lawler.
In attendance, Assemblyman Wieder praised the initiative:
“Rockland County is at its best when we come together to celebrate the values that unite us. This Peace Garden is a powerful tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – two giants who taught the world that true strength lies in nonviolence, justice, and respect for one another. I commend Legislators Dr. Aney Paul, Toney Earl, and Chairman Jay Hood, Jr. for their leadership in bringing this vision to life. It will stand as a lasting reminder of our shared commitment to peace and unity.”
Legislators said the garden will serve as a permanent space for reflection, community gathering, and education – a tribute to the power of nonviolent action and the ongoing pursuit of justice and unity in Rockland County.
The groundbreaking ceremony included remarks from county leaders and was followed by a community gathering and refreshments.
