Rockland County is preparing for a period of extreme winter weather, with bitterly cold temperatures followed by a significant snowstorm expected to impact the area from this weekend into early next week.
Saturday is forecast to remain dry but dangerously cold, with temperatures ranging from -5°F to 6°F. Wind chills could drop as low as -20°F, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Snow is expected to begin early Sunday morning, around 3–4 a.m., and will intensify throughout the day. By Sunday afternoon, snowfall is expected to become moderate to heavy, with visibility deteriorating to less than half a mile in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is forecast from Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning.
Accumulations could reach 8–12 inches by Sunday evening, with total snowfall potentially increasing to 12–16 inches by Monday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to slowly rise into the mid-teens on Monday, with snow tapering off Monday evening. Increasing northwest winds, sustained at 8–10 mph with gusts over 20 mph, may lead to blowing and drifting snow.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions due to the dangerous cold and winter storm conditions. People are advised to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, remain dry, and limit time outdoors when possible. Residents should also check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable during prolonged cold weather.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snowfall, and stay tuned to local forecasts and advisories as conditions evolve.
