Rockland County Awards Record-Breaking $316,000 in Tourism Grants to 30 Businesses

In a significant boost to local tourism, County Executive Ed Day and Director of Economic Development and Tourism Jenna Nazario announced on Friday that 30 businesses have been awarded a total of $316,000 in tourism grants. The funding aims to promote Rockland County as a premier travel destination, supporting economic growth and community development.

“Tourism is a powerful driver of economic growth—it creates jobs, boosts local businesses, and enhances community infrastructure,” said County Executive Ed Day. He highlighted that, since 2014, Rockland County’s sales tax revenue has grown every year, except for 2020 due to the pandemic. He credited strategic investments, such as these targeted grants, for helping turn a $138 million deficit into a surplus.

This economic revitalization has enabled the county to implement measures to alleviate financial pressures on residents, including:

Two consecutive 2% property tax cuts, following two years of zero tax increases.

Continuation of free bus fares since the pandemic.

The 2022 repeal of the county’s energy tax, saving families $12 million annually—equivalent to an 8.4% county property tax cut.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Rockland County’s financial stability. Without tourism-generated sales and local taxes, the average household would need to pay an additional $618 per year in property taxes to maintain existing services. In 2023 alone, the industry supported 6,860 jobs and generated $556 million in visitor spending, marking an 8.4% increase from the previous year.

“Tourism-driven economic development is a vital force in sustaining Rockland County’s growth, prosperity, and overall quality of life,” said Economic Development and Tourism Director Jenna Nazario. “The organizations receiving these grants will have the opportunity to highlight Rockland’s unique attractions, draw in visitors, and further strengthen our local economy.”

The county-funded grants are highly competitive, with performance expectations tied to each dollar awarded. Officials emphasize that these investments are designed to yield tangible economic benefits, ensuring that Rockland County continues to thrive as a vibrant destination for tourists and residents alike.
