The Rockland Conservation & Service Corps (RCSC) is inviting the public to join a celebration recognizing the remarkable achievements of its 28 Conservation Corps Members, who have collectively completed over 5,000 hours of service. The event will be held on Thursday, August 8th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Rockland County Fire Training Center, located at 35 Firemen’s Memorial Drive, Pomona.
During the celebration, RCSC AmeriCorps Members will present demonstrations summarizing key environmental concepts, projects, and accomplishments achieved at seven site placements throughout the Rockland region. These accomplishments include planting 27 native trees, removing invasive plants at Nyack Beach State Park, installing a garden, and cleaning four regional nature museums.
Other notable projects include the Next Generation of Hudson River Educators, rehabilitation of legacy trails at Bear Mountain State Park, maintenance and construction of local hiking trails, flood prevention initiatives, the Hudson River Fish Advisory, invasive species eradication, and service with various local organizations such as the Rockland County Drainage Agency, Division of Environmental Resources, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Clarkstown Planning Department, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County, among others.
The event will feature presentations, videos, games, and other creative projects that highlight the Conservation Corps’ summer of service and educate attendees about important local environmental issues.
The open house-style event will start at 1 p.m., with a pause at 2 p.m. for guest speakers and award presentations. Demonstrations will resume after the speakers and continue until 4 p.m. Attendees are not required to stay for the entire event.
All are welcome to attend. For more information or to RSVP, please call 845-364-2937 or email rcsc@co.rockland.ny.us. RSVP is appreciated but not required.
