Rockland Community College (RCC) announced the results of a comprehensive Economic Impact Report conducted by Lightcast, showcasing the institution’s crucial role in driving economic development in Rockland County and the surrounding region. The report highlights RCC’s substantial $397.8 million contribution to the local economy during the 2022–2023 fiscal year, reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of opportunity and prosperity.
RCC’s economic impact spans Rockland, Orange, and Westchester Counties, driven by its operational spending, student expenditures, and alumni contributions. Operational spending accounted for $68.8 million, reflecting employee wages and the purchase of goods and services, which supported 952 jobs in the region. In-region student spending added another $5.2 million, sustaining 59 jobs. Alumni contributions proved to be the largest economic driver, generating $323.8 million in added income through enhanced workforce productivity—equivalent to supporting 2,953 jobs.
The report also underscored RCC’s impressive return on investment. For students, every dollar invested in their education results in $5.10 in lifetime earnings. For taxpayers, RCC generates $1.70 in tax revenue and public sector savings for every dollar of public funding. For society, the college delivers $8.10 in added income and societal benefits per dollar invested, which include improved public health, reduced crime rates, and increased productivity.
Dr. Beth Coyle, RCC’s Officer in Charge, expressed pride in the findings, emphasizing the college’s vital role in the community. “This report reaffirms the transformative role RCC plays in Rockland County and beyond. Our contributions extend far beyond the classroom, fueling economic vitality, workforce readiness, and community well-being. We are proud to be a key partner in shaping a prosperous future for our region,” she said.
Beyond economic metrics, RCC plays an integral role in enhancing the quality of life in the region. Its partnerships with local industries foster workforce innovation and readiness, while alumni contribute significantly to businesses and community organizations. RCC also enriches the community by fostering a more educated, healthier, and prosperous society.
The findings emphasize RCC’s dual mission of empowering students with the skills and opportunities for lifelong success while driving economic and social progress across the region.
