The Congers Fire Department is mourning the passing of Alfred “Al” Magnatta, a revered World War II veteran and lifelong public servant, who died at the age of 100.
Al Magnatta’s life was defined by extraordinary service to both his country and his community. After returning home from World War II, he joined the Congers Fire Department on March 4, 1946, beginning what would become nearly eight decades of continuous dedication to the fire service. During the war, Magnatta served with the U.S. Army’s 8th Air Force Division, stationed in England from 1943 to 1945, where he flew 25 combat missions as a B-17 aerial gunner.
Within the department, Magnatta quickly distinguished himself as a leader. He rose through the ranks and served as Chief of the Congers Fire Department from 1960 to 1962. That same year, he was appointed Deputy Fire Coordinator for Rockland County, a position he held with distinction until 2020—making him the longest-serving Deputy Fire Coordinator in Rockland County history.
Throughout his career, Magnatta played a pivotal role in shaping the fire service across Rockland County. He served on the False Alarm Committee and the UL Committee, helped establish countywide alarm system standards, and filled numerous roles including Fire Instructor, Administrative Assistant to the County Fire Coordinator, and Fire Liaison during major emergencies and drills, including operations at Indian Point. He responded to nearly every type of emergency the county experienced, including the 80-hour freight train fire following the June 6, 1974 derailment in the tunnel between Congers and Haverstraw.
In recognition of his extraordinary legacy, Monsey Scoop reported that in August 2025, the Town of Clarkstown formally honored Magnatta by renaming Congers Street in his honor, celebrating his service as a World War II veteran and his decades of dedication to the Congers Fire Department and the broader Rockland County community.
Magnatta was also honored in 2005 as Grand Marshal of the Rockland County Volunteer Firemen’s Parade, proudly hosted by the Congers Fire Department. At the time of his passing, he remained the department’s oldest active member, with an extraordinary 79 years of continuous service.
Remembered as a leader, mentor, and constant presence, Alfred “Al” Magnatta set a standard of dedication and professionalism that will endure for generations. His impact on the Congers Fire Department and the Rockland County fire service is permanent and profound.
The department extends its deepest condolences to Al Magnatta’s family, friends, and all those who had the honor of serving alongside him. His legacy of service will never be forgotten.

Such an exemplary life lived by an extraordinary, selfless gentleman. Mr. Magnatta’s dedication to others should serve as a role model for all. Thank you for your tireless service sir, and may you rest in peace.
