A private group known as Matzilei Aish of Rockland (RCMA), identifying itself as a fire safety organization, has come under scrutiny after reports that it has been encouraging residents to call them instead of 911 during emergencies. The group, which has been looking to expand its services into other areas in Rockland County, has raised several safety concerns at the County level.
The concerns include the group’s lack of firefighting and emergency service experience, which could potentially interfere with official fire department responses. Additionally, the RCMA’s failure to conduct state-mandated fire investigations could lead to issues with insurance reimbursement for residents who experience property damage due to fire.
Further concerns have been raised about the group’s failure to report hazards to utility companies, which could lead to additional emergencies. A recent Journal News article revealed that the group consists of only 35 members, operates a single fire truck, and, by its own admission, cannot fight fires inside buildings. It has also been reported that members have been fighting fires without the necessary protective gear.
The Villages of Wesley Hills and New Hempstead have issued a strong recommendation for residents to call 911 in the event of an emergency. Rockland County’s nationally certified 911 center is equipped to dispatch the appropriate first responders quickly and efficiently.
In addition, the Villages encouraged those interested in volunteering to consider joining one of the area’s official volunteer fire departments, where they can receive proper training and join experienced professionals who serve the entire community.
