The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed H.R. 1009, legislation sponsored by Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) to officially designate the United States Postal Service facility at 86 Main Street in Haverstraw as the Paul Piperato Post Office Building.
The bill, reintroduced this Congress, honors the late Rockland County Clerk whose decades of dedicated public service left a profound impact on the community.
Rep. Lawler originally announced the bill during the 118th Congress at a press conference joined by county leaders and members of the Piperato family. Video of that event can be viewed here, and Lawler’s floor remarks following Tuesday’s vote can be viewed here.
Paul Piperato served more than 30 years in public service, including 15 years as Rockland County Clerk. He modernized county operations with innovative systems, launched a 24/7 online records portal, and introduced programs such as RETURN THE F.A.V.O.R., which supports veterans. He was also known for conducting meaningful Naturalization Ceremonies, reflecting his deep respect for new American citizens and his commitment to public service.
“Paul Piperato dedicated more than three decades of his life to public service, including 15 years as Rockland County Clerk, where his vision and commitment transformed county government for the better. As the Rockland County Clerk, he revolutionized the office, making it more accessible and efficient for the community he so dearly loved. His work extended beyond his official duties, touching lives through his involvement with numerous civic organizations, including Jawonio, People to People, and the ARC Rockland Foundation,” said Congressman Lawler.
With House passage complete, H.R. 1009 now advances to the Senate for its next step of consideration.
