A routine traffic stop by the Ramapo Police Department’s Special Operations Unit led to the seizure of suspected illegal drugs and the arrest of a 29-year-old Tallman resident on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
According to Ramapo Police, the incident occurred Thursday afternoon when an officer observed a Tesla commit several traffic violations on Route 59. Police said the driver used a left-turn-only lane to pass stopped traffic before accelerating head-on toward oncoming vehicles when the light turned green, forcing other motorists to stop to avoid a collision before the vehicle swerved back into the proper lane.
During the traffic stop, the officer observed several prescription pill bottles in the vehicle’s center console. After the driver allegedly attempted to conceal one of the bottles, the officer continued the investigation. Police said the driver admitted to sharing prescription medication with another individual.
The investigation led to the discovery of approximately 40 LSD tabs, a digital scale, a large psilocybin mushroom, two glass pipes containing suspected controlled substance residue, and an open bottle of vodka inside the vehicle.
The 29-year-old was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree, an A-II felony, Criminal Possession of a Hallucinogen, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, an A misdemeanor. He was also issued three traffic summonses.
Following arraignment in Airmont Justice Court, the defendant was remanded to the Rockland County Jail in accordance with New York law governing A-II felony charges.
Ramapo Police said the arrest highlights the importance of proactive policing and officers remaining alert during routine traffic stops, noting that careful observation can uncover serious criminal activity and help keep dangerous drugs off the streets.
