Ramapo Police Seek Public’s Help in Solving 1977 Cold Case Homicide

The Town of Ramapo Police Department is renewing its request for the public’s assistance in solving a decades-old cold case. On September 28, 1977, Helen Soudani was murdered at the Aegean Grotto, a family-owned restaurant located in the Ramapo Shopping Center on Route 59, near the former ShopRite supermarket.

At the time of her death, Soudani was a mother to several young children. She was discovered by an employee inside the restaurant around 2:20 a.m. The death was ruled a homicide by asphyxiation (strangulation), and despite efforts, the case has remained unsolved for nearly 50 years.

The Ramapo Police Detective Bureau is urging anyone with new information to come forward. Those with details can contact the department at 845-357-2400 or submit an anonymous tip via the “RocklandCo DA” Tip411 app, available in the App Store or Google Play.
