This year’s prestigious Rockland County Shields Law Enforcement Award has been presented to Ramapo Police Officer Maldonado in recognition of his courageous response to a dangerous altercation that occurred earlier this year.
Officer Maldonado responded to an emergency call involving a disturbance at a local birthday party. Upon his arrival, he was greeted by a large crowd informing him that an intoxicated male had been forcibly removed from the event due to his disorderly behavior. However, the situation quickly escalated when the intoxicated individual attacked another uninvolved male, grabbing him by the neck and initiating a physical confrontation.
Officer Maldonado immediately intervened to protect the victim, who became trapped between the suspect and himself during the struggle. The confrontation intensified when the suspect brandished a knife, threatening the victim’s head and neck. As the officer worked to defuse the situation, the victim was stabbed in the shoulder.
Demonstrating remarkable composure and quick thinking, Officer Maldonado seized a crucial moment when the suspect was momentarily distracted. He physically engaged the attacker and successfully deployed his Taser, incapacitating the suspect and forcing him to drop the weapon. Officer Maldonado then directed the arriving backup officers to tend to the injured victim, who, thanks to Maldonado’s swift actions, sustained only minor injuries.
The Rockland County Shields organization commended Officer Maldonado for his bravery and professionalism in handling a life-threatening situation, preventing further harm and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
