On Wednesday, the Ramapo Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit (TSU) launched a focused pedestrian and bicycle safety initiative in response to a recent uptick in motor vehicle crashes involving non-motorists. The operation took place in an area that has seen three such incidents in recent months and emphasized the department’s three-pronged approach of education, enforcement, and accountability.
As part of the initiative, officers distributed over 100 safety flyers in three languages to promote safer pedestrian and cyclist behavior. The enforcement effort yielded several citations, including six tickets for stop sign violations, one for failure to yield, one jaywalking citation, and others for infractions such as cell phone use while driving, disobeying traffic signals, and operating without a license. All citations will proceed through the appropriate courts to ensure full legal accountability.
Separately, also on Wednesday, Ramapo Police apprehended a suspect from the Bronx following a shoplifting incident at Walmart. Security personnel at the store positively identified the individual at approximately 2:10 p.m. as having stolen tools. The suspect was arrested at the scene, and authorities noted that the vehicle involved was found to be both expired and suspended due to prior toll violations. Charges are currently pending.
