The Ramapo Police Department is alerting residents to a new email scam circulating in the community, designed to extort money through fear and deception. The scam involves an email in which fraudsters falsely claim they have hacked into the recipient’s computer and recorded them watching illicit content. They then threaten to release this fabricated video to the recipient’s family and contacts unless they pay $2,000 in Bitcoin.
To make the scheme appear more credible, the scammers often include a Google Earth image of the victim’s home, along with a QR code to facilitate the payment. Fortunately, one local resident, noticing inconsistencies in the email, avoided falling victim to the scam.
Authorities are urging the community to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures. If you receive such an email, do not panic or send any money. Instead, report the incident to local law enforcement immediately. Additionally, residents are encouraged to file a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
The Ramapo Police Department stresses the importance of community awareness in preventing these increasingly sophisticated scams. With proper vigilance, residents can protect themselves and each other from falling prey to these cybercriminals.

The problem with the oilam who gets victim from these scammers is that they don’t use their seichel. The IRS isn’t going to call you to say you are to be arrested. Amazon doesnt call people to cancel their orders.
