The Rockland County Legislature did not move forward Tuesday night with a vote to hold a public hearing on the proposed Safety and Dignity for All Act, after the item was pulled from the agenda, leaving the bill’s future unresolved.
According to the Rockland County Chairman Jay Hood, the legislation was pulled due to concerns raised by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, which were not comfortable proceeding at this time.
Because the Legislature did not vote to approve a public hearing, the proposal did not advance further during Tuesday night’s session. Legislators indicated that the public hearing would be revisited at a later date, at which point a date, time, and location may be scheduled.
Opponents of the bill have argued that the legislation could restrict cooperation between Rockland County and federal immigration authorities and move the county toward sanctuary-style policies. U.S. Congressman Mike Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, New York State Senator Bill Weber, and Rockland County Executive Ed Day have all publicly opposed the proposal and urged lawmakers to proceed with caution.
Supporters of the legislation, led by Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson, the bill’s sponsor, maintain that the Act does not make Rockland County a sanctuary county. They argue the proposal would require a judicial warrant for ICE civil detainer requests, preserve cooperation in criminal investigations, and apply only to county employees, not municipal police departments.
Tuesday night’s meeting drew strong public interest, with residents closely watching the procedural outcome. With the item pulled and the public hearing postponed, the bill remains under consideration, and no timeline has been announced for when the Legislature may take it up again.

After all the build up and people showing up…hmm what happened
Exactly. Something fishy is going on. Vote Blakeman for governor and this will go away.
100%
At this point I believe ICE is ruining this country. The criminals are gone, let the families who live here survive in peace. People act like the immigrants have easy lives, but they endangered their life and the lives of their family to escape unmanageable conditions and they work hard to help their family survive. The majority of them make this country a better place, everyone chill and stop ruining people’s lives. Remember, our grandparents were all once immigrants too.
