Protesters Disrupt Rockland Business Association Luncheon Featuring Congressman Mike Lawler

A luncheon event hosted by the Rockland Business Association (RBA) took an unexpected turn on Thursday when a group of protesters disrupted a discussion featuring Congressman Mike Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th Congressional District.

The sold-out event, held at Hotel Nyack in the Town of Orangetown, was attended by approximately 50-70 guests, including Rockland County Executive Ed Day, four of the five Town Supervisors, business leaders, and RBA executives. The Rockland Community Foundation, along with representatives from local small businesses and Chambers of Commerce, was also in attendance. The gathering provided an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with Rep. Lawler, who responded to a range of questions.

As Lawler addressed the audience, a group of approximately 10-15 protesters entered the room, carrying signs and linking arms as they shouted over the congressman. The disruption escalated into a physical confrontation, with at least four individuals falling to the floor amid the commotion. Orangetown Police were called to the scene, and the protesters were peacefully escorted from the venue.

Witnesses described the atmosphere as tense and unsettling, with some attendees expressing discomfort as the situation unfolded. The disruption prevented further discussion and limited the opportunity for audience members to ask additional questions.

The Rockland Business Association emphasized its commitment to fostering open dialogue between elected officials and the community, maintaining a strictly bipartisan approach. Attendees included individuals from across the political spectrum who had the opportunity to engage in discussion before the disruption occurred.

Local officials and event organizers expressed disappointment over the incident, noting that respectful engagement is essential for productive discussions. While protests are a recognized form of expression, the interruption of a scheduled event prevented meaningful conversation.

Hotel Nyack, which hosted the event, also expressed regret over the situation. The venue remains committed to providing a welcoming space for business and tourism events and intends to continue facilitating similar gatherings in the future.

One attendee praised the way the situation was handled, commending the congressman and those who assisted in maintaining order. “Kudos to our Congressman for staying calm and to those who tried to remove the protestors, who did not pay but instead crashed a private luncheon. I would also like to say how much I appreciated the fact that Ken Zebrowski stayed right by the Congressman’s side and Stony Point Supervisor Jim Monaghan stood on the Congressman’s other side. These two men were going to make sure that nothing happened to Mr. Lawler. Job well done, especially after the protestors were removed and the Q and A continued.”

While no arrests were made, some attendees reported feeling uneasy as tensions escalated. There were indications that one of the key organizers of the protest may have been Walter Masterson, an individual reportedly from Washington, D.C. Efforts are ongoing to confirm this information.

The Rockland Business Association reaffirmed its dedication to providing a platform for constructive discussions between community leaders and elected officials, ensuring that future events continue to serve as forums for open and respectful dialogue.
