Authorities are investigating a burglary that occurred at the Pearl River home of Assemblyman John McGowan early Friday morning. The Rockland County Assemblyman reported that a group of masked men, armed with crowbars, forced their way into his residence while he and his wife were asleep.
According to McGowan, the intruders entered the home just after 4:00 a.m., but their plans were thwarted by the family’s dogs, whose barking alerted the couple. The commotion enabled McGowan to chase the suspects away and contact the police. While the incident was frightening, McGowan confirmed that no one was injured and nothing was stolen.
“This experience was terrifying and alarming, to say the least,” McGowan said in a statement. “We are so very grateful for this outcome, especially with Christine being eight months pregnant.”
The Orangetown Police Department and Rockland County Sheriff’s Department responded swiftly to the scene and are actively investigating the break-in. Authorities are also probing a similar incident that occurred in the area around the same time.
In his statement, McGowan, a former Rockland County prosecutor, reflected on the experience, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness. “This experience struck a new chord with me and certainly made us more cognizant of the reality that anyone, at any time, can become the victim of a crime, even in the presumed safety of one’s own home,” he said.
McGowan urged residents to take precautions, particularly during the holiday season, such as securing doors, windows, and vehicles, and remaining vigilant. He also praised his dogs for their role in averting the burglary. “To fellow dog owners: always listen to your dogs, and give them an extra pat on the head or scratch behind the ears—their loyalty in such a time of need can never be underestimated.”
The assemblyman concluded his message with holiday greetings, expressing gratitude for the support of law enforcement and the community.
