At approximately 10:44 a.m. Wednesday, the Piermont Fire Department and other emergency personnel responded to a reported vehicle fire on Route 9W near 766 in Piermont. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a two-car crash with one of the vehicles—an electric car—fully engulfed in flames.
Fire crews quickly established command and began fire suppression operations, deploying multiple hose lines and using specialized equipment to cool the underside and battery compartment of the electric vehicle. Firefighters worked for more than three hours to fully extinguish the blaze and ensure that the batteries were safely cooled.
Both drivers were transported to Nyack Hospital by Piermont and South Orangetown EMS in stable condition.
Officials emphasized the increased hazards electric vehicles pose during accidents and fires due to their high-voltage battery systems.
