Pfizer’s $470 Million Pearl River Expansion Project Delayed

Pfizer’s ambitious $470 million project to expand its Pearl River campus has been postponed until at least the fall.

The pharmaceutical giant had announced in 2022 its plans to build a new 260,000-square-foot facility, which would include 55,000 square feet of new laboratories in Rockland County. Initially, Pfizer aimed to complete the Pearl River expansion by 2026. However, the timeline and the future of the project have now become uncertain.

In a related development, Pfizer laid off 285 employees from its Pearl River campus last December. Pfizer has been a presence in Pearl River since 1907, when Dr. Ernst Lederle developed an antiserum to treat children with diphtheria in New York City. Over the years, the facility has been instrumental in developing several vaccines, including the COVID-19 booster.

Pearl River remains Pfizer’s primary location for global vaccine research and development.
