Law enforcement officers, supporters, and community members gathered Friday morning at the Pearl River Dunkin’ for a solemn plaque dedication honoring NYPD Officer Michael Buczek, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on October 18, 1988.
Ramapo Police Chief Martin Hyman, Lieutenant Dolan, Sergeant Baird, and several retired Ramapo officers joined members of the NYPD, including officers from the 34th Precinct, along with representatives from the Orangetown PBA, Rockland County PBA, and Rockland County Shields.
Chief Hyman, reflecting on his early career as a young NYPD officer, shared memories of the night Officer Buczek and Officer Christopher Hoban were killed just hours apart while bravely confronting armed suspects in separate incidents.
Detective Sergeant John Moynihan, who founded the Buczek Little League in Washington Heights in Officer Buczek’s memory, delivered poignant remarks, reminding attendees, “A person dies twice in life. The second time is when their name is said for the last time.” Moynihan emphasized the importance of continuing to say Officer Buczek’s name and honoring his legacy.
Officer Michael J. Buczek, 24, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest two drug suspects inside an apartment building at 580 West 161st Street. The suspects fled to the Dominican Republic, where years later, two were apprehended and sentenced to 25 years to life. Officer Buczek had served with the NYPD for over three years and was survived by his wife, parents, and sister. His memory lives on through a park, a baseball field, and a school named in his honor.
The event was made possible with the support of the Pearl River Dunkin’, which hosted the ceremony, and all involved agencies and individuals who helped organize the tribute.
Officer Buczek’s sacrifice—and that of all fallen officers—remains etched in the hearts of those who continue to wear the badge with honor and courage.

How do you fail to mention that the Dunkin Donuts this was held is was owned by Officer Buczek’s older brother ????
