As the first major heat wave of 2026 settles over the region, Orange & Rockland Utilities (O&R) says it is fully prepared to respond to any power outages that may occur as dangerously high temperatures and humidity drive up electricity demand across Rockland County and the surrounding area.
The utility warned that the prolonged heat, expected to last through the Fourth of July weekend, could place added strain on the electric grid as air conditioners run continuously. While O&R has invested heavily in strengthening its electric delivery system to better withstand extreme weather, the company said scattered outages remain possible if equipment overheats.
To help reduce strain on the grid and lower energy bills, O&R is encouraging customers to use electricity efficiently by setting air conditioners to the highest comfortable temperature, using fans whenever possible, keeping doors, windows, curtains, and shades closed during the hottest parts of the day, postponing heat-producing activities such as cooking until the evening, and delaying electric vehicle charging until after 10 p.m. if possible. Customers can also monitor their energy usage through their online O&R account and consider upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and smart thermostats.
If an outage occurs, O&R reminds customers not to assume the company is automatically aware of it. Outages should be reported through the O&R website, mobile app, by texting OUT to 678797 (ORUPWR), or by calling 1-877-434-4100.
The company also noted that residential customer protections remain in effect during extreme heat. Electric service disconnections are suspended whenever the local heat index is forecast to reach 90 degrees or higher, with additional protections in designated heat island communities.
New York State cooling centers may also be activated during the heat wave. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to the dangerous conditions.
