Orange & Rockland Utilities has announced a new partnership with HomeBoost and the Ramapo Catskill Library System (RCLS) aimed at helping customers reduce their energy bills by improving the efficiency of their homes.
Through the program, O&R customers can borrow a HomeBoost BoostBox, a do-it-yourself energy efficiency kit, from more than 20 libraries across Rockland, Orange, and Sullivan counties. The free kit includes a thermal camera that connects to a smartphone along with instructions for setting up an account through the HomeBoost app.
Once the app is downloaded, users are guided through a step-by-step process to scan different areas of their homes, including doors, windows, and other locations where energy may be escaping. Customers are also encouraged to take photos of their thermostat and labels on their heating system and major appliances.
After completing the assessment, customers will receive a free customized home energy report via email within a few days, valued at $99 and provided courtesy of O&R. The report outlines do-it-yourself improvements and recommendations for taking advantage of O&R energy efficiency programs, rebates, and incentives. Some recommendations may require assistance from a professional contractor.
“By becoming more energy efficient, our customers gain the tools and insights they need to make informed decisions about their energy use, allowing them to take action and potentially reduce costs before they receive their utility bill,” said Janette Espino, O&R Vice President of Customer Service. She added that O&R’s Energy Efficiency team helped return more than $17 million to customers last year through various programs.
Selina Tobaccowala, CEO of HomeBoost, said the partnership helps homeowners identify energy waste and connect with available resources. “After a guided scan, HomeBoost delivers a personalized energy assessment video that connects customers to local rebates, offers DIY guidance, and gives homeowners the information they need to confidently work with contractors,” she said.
Grace Riario, executive director of the Ramapo Catskill Library System, said the initiative also highlights the role libraries play in supporting local communities.
“By offering access to HomeBoost kits through RCLS member libraries, we are helping families save energy, lower costs, and make informed choices for their homes,” Riario said.
According to the program’s data so far, many users discover clear opportunities to improve efficiency in their homes. About 94 percent are advised to add weather stripping or caulking to doors and windows, 92 percent are encouraged to improve insulation and air sealing, and 87 percent receive recommendations to install window treatments to reduce heat loss.
To participate, customers must have an active Orange & Rockland account, a Ramapo Catskill Library System library card, and a smartphone (iPhone or Android) to use with the thermal camera.
HomeBoost BoostBox kits are currently available at several Rockland County libraries, including the Suffern Free Library, Blauvelt Free Library, Valley Cottage Library, Pearl River Public Library, Nyack Library, Palisades Free Library, Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library (Village Branch and Main Library), Nanuet Public Library, New City Library, Rose Memorial Library, Finkelstein Memorial Library, and West Nyack Free Library.
